13 Highlights from Christie’s Current “Falling for Time” Online Watch Sale
Christie’s ongoing series of online watch sales is one of my favorite parts of the auction world. Their watch team is able to consistently curate a terrific balance of vintage and contemporary models at a diverse range of price points; basically, there’s something for everyone. The current “Falling for Time” sale is their largest one yet, featuring over 220 different timepieces from all sorts of eras and makers. We spent the afternoon over at Christie’s HQ in Rockefeller Center yesterday combing over the top lots and a few entries that may surprise you. The Omega Seamaster Chronograph “Soccer Timer” (Lot #4) might be a watch that Omega fanboys are familiar with, but for many (like myself) this might be your first time viewing one. This specific model comes from 1971 and its eponymous function allows you to time halves of a soccer match using the “45” set underneath the minute’s register. The ’60s and ’70s were full of watches with unusual sporty functions ? especially from marques like Heuer, Gallet, and Omega ? and the “Soccer Timer” is a pristine example of the multifunctionality a wristwatch could offer in a previous era.
