Around the Web: The Naked Watchmaker Deconstructs Grand Seiko’s Hi-Beat 9S85A Caliber

Last year, we announced the launch of Peter Speake-Marin’s The Naked Watchmaker, a website promising to bring ?to a new generation the magic and passion of watchmaking and to increase the knowledge of those already bitten by the horological bug.? It delivered. In a short amount of time, the website has become a treasure trove of lay and technical content, featuring everything from interviews to movement deconstructions and behind-the-scenes manufacturing processes.
Having recently become the proud owner of a Grand Seiko wristwatch, I was delighted to find a deconstruction of Grand Seiko’s Hi-Beat 9S85A caliber. If you’ve ever wondered what makes Grand Seiko’s watches and movements so special, then now’s your chance to see it in macro detail, with commentary from one of today’s great watchmakers. With a solid stainless steel two-piece case with one of the strongest case tubes, I have ever seen, to the fully jewelled calibre with all wheels pivoting in rubies. Although the overall finishing could be improved, the resulting calibre combines vintage solidity in construction with modern manufacturing techniques and alloys effectively.”
