Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore ?Montauk?
Fellows, Birmingham, 21 July 2014
Sold for £12,000
There are numerous editions of AP?s hefty Royal Oak Offshore, some predictable, some not so predictable. This startling, blue-hued example definitely belongs in the latter camp, having been produced to celebrate a road oft-travelled by the wealthy types to whom the brand likes to appeal ? the north American ones, at least.
And that road is the famous Montauk Highway which runs from Queens in New York, across Long Island and on to the Montauk Point state park. As observed in the Fellows catalogue note: ?This is so much more than a road; it is the promise of weekend breaks in the Hamptons, sand, sea and open skies.?
As well as having a BMW cruiser motorcycle named after it (the R1200C Montauk, improbably ridden in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies), the Montauk Highway was also immortalised in the Paul Simon song ?Dazzling Blue? ? which might well have inspired Audemars Piguet?s designers to tint the inner tachymeter bezel, the hand and the numbers in various shades of vibrant blue. It is certainly a watch you?re not likely to see that often in grey-skied Britain ? just 300 were made and distributed between AP boutiques in New York, Long Island and Bal Harbour, Florida.
