Charles Frodsham Minute Repeating Chronograph
Sotheby?s London, 15 December 2016
Sold for £296,750
We?ve been waiting for a modern-day Frodsham wristwatch for around 12 years now ? but word on the street is that it might, finally, come to fruition relatively soon. Until then, we at QP would be more than happy to take ownership of this superb yellow gold, open-faced, minute repeating split seconds chronograph with 60-minute register and a one-minute tourbillon by Nicole Nielsen and Co.
Made in around 1902, the 62mm diameter watch is of additional historic interest because it was presented by the celebrated US banker John Pierpoint Morgan to one William Goulding Harding. J.P. Morgan?s tradition of purchasing Frodsham pocket watches began in 1854 when Junius Morgan established the family bank in London. Between them, three generations of Morgans bought around 50 Frodsham watches from 1854 to 1934, either for themselves or as gifts.
The large number of complications incorporated into the Sotheby?s watch suggest Harding was a partner in the firm ? and a highly regarded and much admired one, too.
