It was not a bumper year for Armin Strom in terms of watches – no new models to report – but the indie brand did show us something interesting: an online watch configurator tool that lets you spec out your Tourbillon Gravity or Skeleton Fire in all manner of lurid (or tasteful) combinations. You can vary the colours of movement plates and bridges as well as the strap, case elements, stitching and hands. It taps into the way you might shop for a supercar, adding carbon fibre diffusers or orange wing mirrors.
Fine, you may say, but what’s the big deal" Well, it’s two things; one, a Swiss independent watch brand launched an online tool that is -shock horror- both slick and presentable and very easy to use. Two: the bigger story here really is that you can now buy Armin Strom watches online, something previously impossible. The brand is hoping it opens up new markets, naturally – while we see it as continued evidence that 2017 is the year watch brands really start to get their act together online – as we reported here last year.
