Omega’s history stretches all the way back to 1848, and a recent dedication by the Swiss brand to embrace and showcase its heritage brought Omega representatives to New York this week to offer a rare look at several significant timepieces from its museum in Bienne, Switzerland ? several of them intimately connected to important figures and milestones in 20th-Century American history. The most expensive Omega watch ever sold at auction ? a world-record-setting 1.5 million Swiss francs, paid by Omega at Philipps’ Geneva Auction earlier this year ? this 18k white-gold wristwatch was presented to Elvis Presley in February 1961 by RCA Records as a celebration of a milestone the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll achieved that year: 75 million records sold worldwide. Measuring a period-appropriate 33 mm in diameter and containing the manual-wound Omega Caliber 510, the watch features a silvered ivory dial with a small second subdial, surrounded by a bezel adorned with 44 brilliant-cut diamonds. Engraved on its caseback with the message, “To Elvis, 75 Million Records, RCA Victor,” this timepiece was one of at least two Omegas known to have been owned by Elvis ? another was a Seamaster that he wore during his stint in the U.S. Army ? and its provenance has been confirmed by photos of the music legend wearing it.
