For 2020, IWC has unfused its legendary Portugieser line of watches with nostalgia by introducing its latest offerings. Along with releasing new color combinations for the much-beloved Portugieser 42, IWC has launched a new line of Portugieser Automatic 40 models as an homage to the original reference 325 from 1939. The new Portugieser Automatic 40 marks the return the six o’clock small seconds subdial, which is a tribute to its 1930 roots when the original Reference 325 Portuguese wristwatch was created on the demand of two wealthy businessmen from Portugal. Powering the new 40mm models is the IWC automatic caliber 82200, which offers a power reserve of 60 hours. It is encased in a relatively smaller 40mm case that makes it a dressier timepiece along with preserving its sporty character. The heritage-infused watch features a clean dial with only the small seconds subdial. It doesn?t get the date display or the power reserve indicator, which isn?t a surprise considering the size of the watch.
The 42mm Portugieser Automatic gets two new versions, offered in both steel and gold. The dial features a familiar layout with the power reserve indicator at three o’clock, the running seconds at nine o’clock, and the date down at six o’clock. The gold version is paired with a maritime-themed blue dial and gold plated hands, while the stainless steel edition sports a rich burgundy dial; both the dials are finished with a sunburst effect.
