As per recent tradition, IWC has focused on building out one of its timepiece collections at January’s SIHH watch salon (this year’s showcase family was the Pilot’s), while dropping new, often limited, models in its other collections throughout the year. Last week, the first of these was unveiled ? a new titanium-cased version of its Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month, limited to 100 pieces.

The 45-mm case made of grade 5 titanium ? a material used in modern automobile engines as well as aerospace components ? reflects the “back to the roots” ethos that inspired the Ingenieur collection’s redesign in 2017. Not only are current Ingenieur models more reminiscent aesthetically of the original models from the 1960s; they also more directly channel those watches’ utilitarian toughness, with a soft iron inner cage providing the movement with exceptional magnetism resistance. Like other models in IWC’s portfolio outfitted with this complicated movement, such as 2017’s 50th Anniversary Aquatimer Limited Edition, the slate-colored dial has a distinctive look, with the date and month indicated in large numerals in the style of a digital watch.
