MB&F dives in: the eight-legged Octopod table clock
Another fun launch from MB&F: the latest clock from the concept laboratory is the multi-limbed Octopod
The newest machine from MB&F is the Octopod, a seriously cool eight-day table clock with a movement by Swiss clockmaker L?Epée 1839. Poised atop eight articulated legs, the octopus-inspired clock can be manoeuvred so that it either stands or crouches on a desk.
A swivelling transparent ?head? houses the mechanics. It?s partially gimballed on an axis like a ship?s chronometer, meaning that the display can be easily rotated into view.
Inside, the movement appears to float: a transparent glass plate has been treated with a film of anti-reflective coating on both sides to create the illusion.
MB&F says that the head is reminiscent of the bathysphere in James Cameron?s 1989 film The Abyss. It?s certainly sci-fi, although the pointed legs give a scuttling, slightly extra-terrestrial quality – particularly when viewed in tandem with the HM6 Alien Nation, or even the Destination Moon table clock. It is most certainly a companion piece to MB&F’s most recent wristwatch, the divisive HM7 Aquapod.
Inside the MB&F Octopod
L?Epée?s manual-winding movement has an eight-day power reserve, generated by a single barrel. Interestingly, the escapement is actually mounted on the minute hand rather than a stationary movement plate.
Adjusting the counterweight for the regulator-bearing minute hand in three dimensions proved especially challe...
