Omega, New America’s Cup Timekeeper, Celebrates with Seamaster Planet Ocean Limited Edition
The world’s oldest international sports trophy, sailing’s America’s Cup, will be contested again in March 2021 in New Zealand, and Omega, longtime partner of Emirates Team New Zealand since 1995, announced it is coming onboard as Official Timekeeper of the competition. Marking the launch of the Swiss watchmaker’s new role will be a special edition of its Seamaster Planet Ocean sport-luxury timepiece.
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition
The 2021 America’s Cup will be the 36th edition of the prestigious race, and the third one for which Omega has served as timekeeper; Omega succeeds Panerai, the watch brand that timed the 35th America’s Cup in 2017. The timepiece that Omega has unveiled to commemorate the partnership hails from the Seamaster Planet Ocean collection, housed in sporty 43.5-mm steel case with a unidirectional rotating divers’ bezel ? on this model, notable for its use of a blue ceramic ring and white-and-red liquid ceramic sector for the first five minutes of the scale, corresponding to the countdown to a regatta’s start. The polished, white ceramic dial features red and blue details on the hands and hour markers, a date window at 3 o’clock, and two subtle references to the America’s Cup: a transferred logo above the 6 o’clock position and the distinctive shape of the “Auld Mug” trophy used for the seconds hand’s counterweight.
