Omega Seamaster Special Edition
Antiquorum, New York, 9 April 2014
Sold for $10,625 (£6,350)
There?s a Paul Newman theme to this pick, this one being a striking special edition of a 1997 Speedmaster created to mark that year?s Champ Car open-wheel series. One of the governing bodies of the sport was called Championship Auto Racing Teams, hence the CART on the Seamaster?s dial.
Interestingly, 1997 was the first full season in which the ?CART? designation returned to use, having earlier been changed to Indy Car. Cart went bust at the end of 2003, which probably makes this very Seamaster something of a rarity ? not least because it was offered in virtually unworn condition. It was sold with a certificate of authenticity explaining that it had been a gift from Paul Newman?s Newman Haas racing team to Jerry Westhouse, a descendant of the Maybelline cosmetics empire, who follow his passion for engines and became a racing car builder.
