Oris launches the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition
Oris has released a new bronze chronograph named for an inspirational US diver, the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition
The latest watch from Oris is a bronze diver?s chronograph, inspired by Carl Brashear, the first African American to become a U.S. Navy Master Diver.
It?s based on the Oris Divers Sixty- Five, cast in bronze to symbolise the early diving equipment of the same material used by Brashear, and is limited to a run of 2,000 pieces.
Born to sharecroppers in Kentucky in 1931, Carl Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 and gained the qualification of Master Diver, the highest level of qualification obtainable by a member of U.S. Navy diving community, in 1970.
This was against incredible odds: Brashear lost his left leg in a naval accident 4 years previously, when a tow line broke loose onboard the USS Hoist and dragged a pipe into his lower leg.
He also faced systemic oppression and racism on his journey to success: Brashear joined the Navy shortly after President Truman signed the order for desegregation in 1948.
The Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition
The first Carl Brashear watch, which Oris released in 2016, was also bronze, and was time-only.
The new 43mm chronograph has a bronze case, bezel, crown and pushers, which will acquire a patina over time, and features a bubble-curved sapphire crystal. The deep blue dial has a bicompax layout, with twin counters at 3 and 9 o?clock.
