Panerai Depth Gauge Mike Horn
Antiquorum, Hong Kong, 28 June 2014
Sold for HK$ 87,500 (£6,700)
Watch ambassadors come and go, and many are employed because of their extreme feats of derring-do in the hope that buyers will want to appear equally adventurous by dint of wearing the same sort of timepiece.
But, for the sheer insanity of the tasks he undertakes ? not to mention the fact that he is possibly the hardest man I?ve ever met ? Mike Horn is pretty much unbeatable. QP first encountered him back in 2006, shortly after he became a Panerai ambassador and shortly before he set out to walk to the North Pole. In winter. He managed, of course, and came back to tell us all about it.
It was actually a fairly tame trip for Horn, who has also circumnavigated the globe at latitude zero in 16 months ? without using motorised transport; swum the length of the Amazon (4,100 miles) and travelled 20,000 kilometres around the Arctic circle using only boats, kites and sledges. This special edition Panerai Luminor Submersible depth gauge watch sold by Antiquorum commemorated the ?Pangea Expeditions? he instigated in 2008 to enable young explorers to travel to some of the most remarkable places in the world in a four-year voyage of discovery.
By the fact that it was in ?AAA? condition, it can safely be assumed that the previous owner was more of a stay-at-home type.
