Patek Philippe Ref. 5001T
Sotheby?s ?New York, 10 June 2014
Sold for $1,325,000
No, Patek aficionados ? that reference number isn’t the result of a typographical error. We?ve all heard of the range-topping Reference 5002 Sky Moon Tourbillon, the double-dialed astronomical marvel of which around 100 were made between 2001-2011. Cases were generally in yellow, pink or white gold, or platinum, with each watch costing around the £1 million mark.
This Reference 5001T, however, is a one-off version in titanium, very likely a special commission rather than a prototype. Such a watch is clearly difficult to value but, based on the fact that the titanium-cased Patek Ref. 5004T offered at last year’s Only Watch auction in Monaco made ?2.95 million, it seemed likely that a new Sky Moon Tourbillon record was in the offing. However, it only sold for $1,325,000, so the highest auction price for the model to date remains $1.5 million, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2008. The sale additionally featured two more titanium-cased pieces that are likely unique: a 5033T minute repeater annual calendar and a 5102T Celestial.
