If ever there was a lesson in the importance of keeping one?s finger on the pulse of the auction scene and being ready to strike for a bargain, then the sale of this watch was it. For those who haven?t heard of Peter Roberts, he is undoubtedly one of the most talented of the very few true English watchmakers working today. He was, in fact, the first Englishman to complete the Swiss-based WOSTEP course and, as a lecturer himself, he went on to teach both Peter Speake-Marin and Stephen Forsey.
At Salon QP in 2012, Roberts announced his intention to make a small series of watches with five central hands inspired by his WOSTEP graduation project. The result was the Grand Complication 5, a 40-piece, steel-cased limited edition based on a batch of new, old stock movements and combining a chronograph, second time zone, full calendar and moonphase. The current price of a Grand Complication 5 is £18,000 and it is widely believed that these watches will become highly sought after in years to come ? so whoever was quick enough and smart enough to snap this six-month old example up for just £6,875 deserves a pat on the back.
