Over the last couple of years, the partnership between MB&F and L’Epée 1839 has spawned several incredible creations with unique designs, including the Sherman robo-watch and the Octopod table clock. The two Swiss brands have collaborated once again to introduce a new out-of-this-world desk clock called the Starfleet Explorer. The latest offering is a smaller, more compact rendition of the Starfleet Machine that came out in 2014 and features several updates over the original table clock. Designed by MB&F and created by L’Epée 1839, the Starfleet Explorer measures 16.5cm x 11cm and is available in three different colors of blue, green, and red. In addition to that, the futuristic timepiece comes with three small spacecraft in orbit around a movement that rotates every five minutes.
At the top of the timepiece is a disc in which the minutes are marked in five-minute intervals. The disc rotates every 60 minutes and time is indicated through a brightly colored fixed hand. Underneath it is a conical chapter ring that showcases the hours. Instead of the ring rotating, a hand featuring the same bright color rotates around it every 12 hours. Powering the watch is a hand-wound movement and operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour with 8 days of power reserve. A double-ended key is used to set the time and to wind the movement.
