This year is the 55th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera which we’ve been celebrating with a multi-part series highlighting the model’s unique history. At Baselworld 2018, TAG Heuer introduced multiple new models to commemorate the occasion, from the ultra-modern, skeletonized Tête de Vipère to the vintage-inspired Calibre 16 Chronograph in two different colors.

In the official WatchTime Baselworld 2018 wrapup, I described the blue-dialed Calibre 16 Chronograph on a steel bracelet as one of the most tempting introductions of the entire show. There was something about how the almost-azure dial and orange-red highlights contrasted that really stood out for me. Overall, it’s an inspired vintage take that doesn’t feel overly antiquated or bland. TAG Heuer did end up going with always-controversial, faux-aged lume for the hour and minute hands and indices but it doesn’t dominate the watch’s look and, in my opinion, effectively complements the blue model’s appeal.
Along with the blue dial, TAG Heuer also released a sporty black and red model on a motorsport-inspired perforated black leather strap with red stitching that is reminiscent of the Monza re-issue from 2016.
