Two core pieces from Ulysse Nardin that you need to know
Ulysse Nardin?s Classico Paul David Nardin and Le Locle Diver are solid staples from a brand too often associated with the obscure
Ulysse Nardin made its SIHH debut this year with a handful of models that tended towards either the extremely traditional, or the slightly outlandish. There was the Classico Manufacture ‘Grand Feu? with an in-house movement, the UN-320; then there were the slightly wackier watches, as with the multi-hued Hourstriker Pin-Up.
Now we have news of two much more middle-of-the-road watches that slipped slightly under the radar at the time. First up, let’s look at the Classico Paul David Nardin, a handsome steel reinterpretation of a 1945 wristwatch produced by the brand.
The watch takes its name from Paul-David Nardin, son of founder Ulysse Nardin (although the hyphen seems to have been lost along the way). Following his father?s death at the age of 53 in 1876, Paul-David stepped up to become the head of the company. It turned out to be a rather good fit – two years later, Paul-David won a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition for his chronometers.
The 39mm Classico Paul David Nardin is a welcome return to basics, and a reminder that Ulysse is a manufacture with more to its name than heavy marine influences, or experimental models like the Innovision 2 (impressive though that is). It?s simply a well-executed archive design, with a plethora of retro touches.
