The Pros & Cons of Living Next To A Black Hole

Have you ever had a neighbor that you just couldn?t stand" Of course you have! It?s a right of passage for many – at one point or another we all have to deal with someone playing their music too loud in the apartment next to you or being a little too nosey. But no matter the neighbor horror story you carry around in your back pocket, you should count yourself lucky that you don?t live next to a black hole. As this fun and fascinating article in Ars Technica describes, getting too close to a black hole comes with all kinds of interesting gravitational challenges that humans, quite frankly, are not equipped to resolve. Fortunately for the earth bound, the nearest black hole is 1,500 light years away. That?s plenty of distance to keep from feeling the strangest effects of a black hole, but it?s an interesting thought experiment nonetheless.
